Uganda Communication Commission has summoned NBS TV entertainment show hosts over what the regulator called persistent use of abusive language.
The communications sector regulator Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has summoned a number of presenters from a number of local television stations for their continued use of offensive, derogatory and slanderous language against a number of people. As a regulator of the sector UCC receives a number of complaints of errant media practices from the public.
The number of TV stations whose presenters have been summoned includes Live Wire from Spark TV, Uncut Sabula and Uncut Kalakata by NBS TV, Kapyaki by Kingdom TV to mention but a few. The media personalities summoned have been called to answer to charges of invasion of the privacy of individuals they talk about on their shows, spreading inaccurate, misleading content as well as use of profanity.
This action comes at a time when 3 NBS TV presenters are languishing in Kitalya Prison on charges of offensive communication and defamation. The three plus the recently released Isma Olaxess are answering to charges raised by musician OS Suuna.
“The Commission has specifically invited presenters as key sector players because it is alleged that the language and statements used by the presenters and guests are often abusive, demeaning, derogatory and contain unsubstantiated claims against different personalities,” reads part of the statement issued by UCC.
